General Knotting Guide
Knots are useful for Scouts in many situations. Here are a few common knots used by Scouts in their testwork and general purpose.
Reef Knot
Used for bandaging and joining two ropes of the same size.
How To Tie
Clove Hitch
Used for tying a rope to a pole. Will not slip while strain is equal on both directions, or on one and only, provided it is a straight pull, but will shake out if used to tie up animals.
How To Tie
Fisherman's Knot
Used to tie together two wet or slippery lines or sheets or blankets in case of fire.
How To Tie
Round Turn and Two Half Hitches
Used to tie an end of a rope to a pole or standing objects. It will not slip in wet conditions.
How To Tie
Sheepshank
Used to strengthen and for shortening a rope.
How To Tie
Sheet Bend
Used to join two ropes of unequal sizes or thickness.
How To Tie
Double Sheet Bend
This is the more secure version of the Sheetbend. It is commonly used for tying up flags to the flagpoles.
How To Tie
Fisherman's Bend
Used for securing purposes. It is more secure than the Round Turn and Two Half Hitches but it cannot conveniently be made in a rope under strain.

An important knot because of its strength and simplicity, and becomes more secure when end is seized as shown.

This knot is used to secure a heavy load to a spar, ring or shackle,
and is normally used for bending a rope to the ring of an anchor

Bowline
Used for rescue work by tying a loop that will not slip. A double overhand loop has to be made to tie it round a person or object, then haul it up. See the diagram on the left.
How To Tie

Running Bowline
For use on traps where the loop size of the bowline could be adjusted.
How To Tie

Double Bowline / Bowline On The Bight
A clasic two-loop bowline tied in a bight

Water Bowline
This is a very secure loop probably developed for use in an environment that make security properties for most knots change dramatically... underwater.

How To Tie

Rolling Hitch
The rolling hitch allows you to slide the knot up and down the running part of the rope. It can be used on tent ropes, as a strainer for a bridge, in fact anywhere you want to be able to loosen or tighten a rope quickly.
How To Tie
Diagonal Lashing
The diagonal lashing is used when spars cross but do not touch or where they tend to spring apart under pressure.
Turk's Head Woggle
This is a self-made woggle out of knotting ropes and are commonly used.
How To Tie
Carrick Bend
A classic Bend, useful in heavy cable, and also the start of many decorative knots
How To Tie
Manharness Knot
Used to put a loop in a line to add a handle or grip for pulling

More commonly used by Scouts for the Vertical Rope Climb
How To Tie

Japanese Lashing
This lashing is used to lash two spars, one horizontal and one vertical together.
Tripod/Figure of Eight Lashing
This lashing is used to tie three spars together in order to set up a tripod.
