Physical deformity not a barrier for Mohd Bukhori
By V. CHANDRASEKARAN Adapted from The Star, Monday,
August 19, 2002
At The 10th Malaysian Jamboree
SIK: Physical deformity did not stand in the way for 14-year-old
Mohd Bukhori Ali to fulfil his long-time desire to participate in a
national scouts jamboree.
Born without hands and legs, Mohd Bukhori, was among the 5,000
scouts who took part in the 10th National Scouts Jamboree at Rimba
Taqwa recreational park here. The nine-day jamboree will end next
Saturday.
He was the centre of attraction for the participants who came
from India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Cambodia, Brunei,
Thailand and Singapore.
Jointly organised by the state government, National Scouts
Federation and state Scouts Council, it was opened by Kedah Sultan
Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah yesterday.

LIFETIME EXPERIENCE . . . Mohd Bukhori being surrounded
by other scouts as Md Sapar helps him jot down notes at
the scouts jamboree Sunday.
|
“I have always wanted to attend such a big scale jamboree and I am
happy to be here,’’ he said, adding that he would also like to
go overseas one day for similar gatherings.
“Being in the scouts movement enables me to make new friends. I
like to socialise and make new friends and my handicap is not a
problem at all,’’ said the cheerful Form Two student of SMK
Hosba of Kubang Pasu when met at the jamboree yesterday.
He said he was among 30 students from his school attending the
jamboree and the school’s scouts patrol leader Md Sapar Sawal, 16,
helped him to move around in his wheelchair.
Mohd Bukhori, the sixth among nine siblings, also excels in
cooking and has received prizes in cooking competitions.
“The scouts movement has strengthened my determination and
willpower which I hope will help me to achieve my ambition of
becoming a lawyer,’’ he said.
R. Lakshminarayanan, 30, a scouts teacher from Bharathiya Vidya
Bhavan school from Erode, Tamil Nadu, who is here with nine scouts
from his school, said this was the first time his team had
participated in a scouts programme overseas.
Lakshminarayanansaid it was a good idea to have scouts from
various countries meet yearly.
“It fosters rapport among the scouts and allows foreign
participants to learn more about the organising country,’’ he
said.
The Sultan of Kedah, who urged the participants to utilise the
jamboree to gain more experience and foster better rapport, signed a
plaque in commemoration of the jamboree.
Various cultural dances and songs were performed at the opening.
